In the Pocket Radio for Drummers Digital Audio Magazine
Broadcasting from the pocket, interviewing drummers who epitomize it, in attempts to define and explain it; a must for ALL musicians and songwriters to hear…
Though I had excelled in my craft by the early age of 10, something didn’t seem right. Why did I take to drumming and even music theory so immediately and move into advanced levels almost immediately, while these abilities eluded others’ grasp? Why was I praised as “talented” and looked to as something special by others who seemed to “have little or no talent”? Couldn’t they do it too?
This is no ego trip but, at this stage, I had the idea that thinking this about myself might be, that is until I came to understand what the general sentiment was that most people harbored regarding the subject.
My first answer to that question was received (from whom I don’t recall) with a bit of skepticism and even a little trepidation, as it not only suggested that “you had to be born with it” (such a thing as “talent” existed), but it couldn’t be learned.
I mean, who cares? If I had it, if I was indeed “talented”, who am I to complain? But as I entered adolescence and started teaching drums to others in high school and college, advancing progressively in my own abilities, I grew increasingly weary of the “you have to be born with it” thing. For it not only meant that skilled drumming was “unreachable” and extremely esoteric, but that this held consistently true in all music, entertainment, arts, etc.
Out of this “you have to be born with it” concept came a natural corollary about “playing in the pocket” both with those who could and those who only recognized it8 in other performers and only wished they could.
